I use them as garrisons or when I really need reinforcements fast, but they do get outclassed in the late game. Simple tier 1 swordsmen or pikemen are more of a situational thing. If you can build them in a city with a Dungeon they become better than many tier 3 units. This unit gives (non-Tigran) berserkers a run for their money in how effective a combat unit it is, and is much easier to get. playing necromancer, being a Shadowborn) they become incredibly hard to kill. If you can find some additional sources of Lifestealing (i.e. Butchers even get Volunteer, so you pay as little as 4 gold per turn for them. I prefer them over many class units, and again at tier 2 upkeep they are much more affordable. With upgrades from ruins like GreyHuntr mentions they are amazing defensive units that also deal plenty of damage. Goblin Butchers and Frostling Royal Guards are some of my favourite units in the game. You do need some source of healing because their defense sucks, but otherwise there is no reason not to build these. It hits harder and has more hitpoints than a Human Knight, and can get Killing Momentum for unmatched stomping power. Sure, a shock trooper is much better in a slogging match and hits harder against non-cavalry troops, but is also twice as expensive, requires a much more expensive building to produce, and needs medals before it gets Warcry.įrostling Mammoth rider is arguably even better. At gold medal they add in Overwhelm and Armour piercing, which would give them. Charge + warcry + polearms + plenty of normal armour and damage = pain. Orc Black Knights makes for great offensive units, for example.
